Thanksgiving Meditation from George Washington

"Whereas it is the duty of all nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey His will, to be grateful for His benefits, and humbly implore His protection and favor; and - whereas both Houses of Congress have, by their joint committee, requested me "to recommend to the people of the United States a day of public thanksgiving and prayer, to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many and signal favors of Almighty God, especially by affording them an opportunity peaceably to establish a form of government for their safety and happiness":
Now, therefore, I do recommend and assign Thursday, the 26th day of November next, to be devoted by the people of these States to the service of that great and glorious Being who is the beneficent author of all the good that was, that is, or that will be; that we may then all unite in rendering unto Him our sincere and humble thanks for His kind care and protection of the people of this country previous to their becoming a nation; for the signal and manifold mercies and the favorable interpositions of His providence in the course and conclusion of the late war; for the great degree of tranquility, union, and plenty which we have since enjoyed; for the peaceable and rational manner in which we have been enabled to establish constitutions of government for our safety and happiness, and particularly the national one now lately instituted; for the civil and religious liberty with which we are blessed, and the means we have of acquiring and diffusing useful knowledge; and, in general, for all the great and various favors which He has been pleased to confer upon us.
And also that we may then unite in most humbly offering our prayers and supplications to the great Lord and Ruler of the Nations, and beseech Him to pardon our national and other transgressons; to enable us all, whether in public or private stations, to perform our several and relative duties properly and punctually; to render our national government a blessing to all the people by constantly being a government of wise, just, and constitutional laws, discreetly and faithfully executed and obeyed; to protect and guide all sovereigns and nations (especially such as have shown kindness to us), and to bless them with good governments, peace, and concord; to promote the knowledge and practice of true religion and virtue, and the increase of science among them and us; and, generally, to grant unto all mankind such a degree of temporal prosperity as He alone knows to be best."

George Washington (+1799), the first president of the United States of America, issued this Thanksgiving Proclamation at the request of Congress on October 3, 1789.

May God bless you, your family, and your friends on this Thanksgiving Day. We intone the prayer and sentiments of President Washington on behalf of our nation and her citizens. May Mother Mary and the Saints intercede to Christ that our nation glorify God in our words and deeds.
In Christ's Name, we pray. Amen.

Be Won By Christ - Active Parts of Christ's Church

Become an active part in your faith community.

Discuss the parish ministry opportunities with your family and friends, pray about Christ’s calling of living His Mission, and investigate which roles you are called to fill.

Ministry forms will be available at Mass on November 14/15.

An excerpt from one of our witness presentations last weekend:

I believe it is important to give back to God some of the many blessings He has given me by being active in His church.  And by being involved in His church, I have received even more blessings.  My children have learned how to give of themselves  and help others.  My wife and I  have met many people, and made lasting friendships  with others who share our same values and love for God. So in the process of getting involved in our parish to give back to God in thanksgiving for his blessings, we have received even more blessings.  I urge all of you to become involved.  Give of yourselves, even just a little, and you will get so much more back. Thank you.

Be Won Over By Christ - Discern Ministry Calling

Open your heart to the Love of Christ and share it in your Cathedral parish.

Remember to discern the ministry opportunities that are available within your Cathedral parish.

Discuss these opportunities with your family and friends, pray about Christ’s calling of living His Mission, and investigate which roles you are called to fill.

Ministry forms will be available at Mass on November 14/15.

Be Won Over By Christ - Take Part in Your Parish

We are called to be won over by Christ and to win over disciples for Him, but how can we really do this? You are uniquely called by Christ to take part in His Church. Have you ever considered becoming actively involved in your parish life? Participating in the Mass ministries or in parish groups are great ways to live your life for Christ!

You may wonder “Great, but how do I start?”

First, pray about it. Offer prayers to Christ, offering your heart and your hands for His work. The following prayer may be helpful:
Heavenly Father, Stir in my soul the desire to renew my faith and deepen my relationship with your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ so that I might truly believe in your love.   Pour out your Spirit, so that I might be strengthened to go forth and witness to the Gospel in my everyday life through my words and actions.  God, our Father, I pray that through the Holy Spirit I might hear your call to deepen my faith, grow in confidence to proclaim the Gospel and boldly witness how I have been won over by Christ. Amen.

Second, join us as we come together to fulfill Christ’s mission in our parish. During the weekend Masses on November 7/8, volunteers will give witness accounts of their service for Cathedral as well as the personal benefits they’ve gained from serving Christ’s Church. Open your heart to your peers, family members, and friends who give witness and ponder your own witness to the faith in your volunteer work. Everyone attending these Masses will receive a booklet of our ministries for your prayer and perusal. Discuss the roles you’d like to fill with your family, spouses, and friends.
