Cathedral Church Cleaning Day Sat, Dec 6th

We'll be having a church cleaning day at Cathedral on Saturday, December 6th at 11:00 am. Please help us get the church ready for Christmas!
Bring what you want to use to clean (brooms, dust cloths, etc. ). We will be cleaning the wood behind the altar, floors, and other "corners" as we see them.

Living Out Advent: Week 1

We often talk about the Advent season, but how can you prepare for Christ on a daily basis? The USCCB put together a daily calendar of things you can live out the Advent season and prepare yourself for Christ's coming.

November 30

§  Bless your Advent wreath. Sing "O Come Emmanuel" and light the first candle.
§  "Jesse Tree". . . is another tradition your family can include in your Advent observance, especially if you have young children. A Jesse Tree depicts the relationship of Jesus with Jesse and other biblical figures who were the ancestors of Jesus. Jesse was the father of King David and is often looked upon as the first person in the genealogy of Jesus. For your own Jesse Tree, a branch can be placed into a pot or a large vase at the beginning of Advent and every day a new ornament can be added to it. These ornaments represent individual figures or stories from the Old and New Testaments. As the children place the ornaments onto the branch, a parent can read an appropriate Scripture passage that talks about the given ancestor of Jesus. There are many passages that can be chosen and many symbols that can represent various figures. Each family can create their own list of figures and  symbols
§  Make or purchase an Advent calendar and open the window for the first day of the season or download our Family Advent Calendar and post it in your home as a reminder to take time for prayer and family every day during this holy season.

Gifts for Winona Tree & Tags Are Here

Our Annual Gifts For Winona Trees are now up at both St. Casimir and Cathedral parishes. Our Social Justice Committee has been hard at work to get the tags ready in case you plan to do Black Friday shopping and would like to take a tag or two with you.
All presents (and their corresponding tags) are due to the parish office or gathering spaces at Cathedral or St. Casimir by Monday, December 15th. We ask that the total dollar amount per tag be $35. A change this year is that presents need to be returned unwrapped, and presents for each tag separated in bags with the tag attached.
Gifts for Winona is an annual effort headed-up through St. Mary's University and several area organizations that help provide Christmas presents for needy families in Winona County. Each tag lists items the age and code of a person and things they would like. There are also tags for food cards.
This is a great way to help those in our community. Thank you for your generosity!

Stewardship Prayer for November

Gracious and loving God,
as the autumn season continues its transformation;
and the days become shorter, the earth cooler;
as we anticipate joining family and friends
in joyful celebration on Thanksgiving Day,
we pause to give You thanks and praise
for the abundant blessings You have bestowed upon us:
For life and health, safety and comfort,
food and nourishment, we are sincerely grateful.
Through your Spirit, open our hearts
so that we may be even better stewards
of these rich and unmerited gifts.
Show us how to be a blessing for the poor,
sick, lonely and all who suffer.
And help us nurture the gift of faith,
revealed to us by your Son, Jesus Christ,
our greatest gift,
who reigns with You and the Holy Spirit,
one God forever and ever.
Amen.

On Thanksgiving, What Do You Say?

On Thanksgiving, What Do You Say?
How can I repay the Lord for all the great good done for me?  ~Psalm 116:12

It is tempting to believe that gratitude is innate or instinctive, but experience suggests otherwise.  Most adults can clearly remember their apprenticeship in the attitude of gratitude.  Our training is administered in deceptively simple encounters, like when a grandparent offers a cookie, a sibling shares a toy, or a stranger pays a compliment.  Immediately after such gifts are presented, there is a pregnant pause before one of our parents fills the void with the default mantra of our training: “What do you say?”  Ideally, in time we internalize this training into true, spontaneous thanks.

"Christ the King" with Chris Stefanick (Video)

This week's video is brought to us by Chris Stefanick, founder of Real Life Catholic and national speaker on Evangelization. He talks about Christ as King and what that means:
"Jesus is a King. That means that life and faith aren't something we approach on our terms, but his. After all, he's the King and we're not. This is the solution to a relativist approach to faith that would make us "gods." "

Join us this weekend for the Feast of Christ the King!
