Pope Francis Writes a Letter to Families Requesting Prayers

THE POPE WRITES A LETTER TO FAMILIES ASKING THEM TO PRAY FOR THE NEXT SYNOD

Vatican City, 25 February 2014 (VIS) – Pope Francis has written a letter to families asking them to pray for the next Synod of Bishops, which will be celebrated in the Vatican in October, and the theme of which will be “The pastoral challenges of the family in the context of evangelisation”. The letter, dated 2 February, Feast of the Presentation of Jesus in the Temple, is published in full below:
“Dear families,
With this letter, I wish, as it were, to come into your homes to speak about an event which will take place at the Vatican this coming October. It is the Extraordinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops, which is being convened to discuss the theme of “pastoral challenges to the family in the context of evangelization”. Indeed, in our day the Church is called to proclaim the Gospel by confronting the new and urgent pastoral needs facing the family.

Prayer of Discipleship

Loving God,
I thank you for choosing me to be your disciple
and for the gift of your Son, Jesus.
Help me proclaim and bear witness to the Gospel
by word and by deed
today and every day.
Open my heart to
the outcast, the forgotten,
the lonely, the sick, and the poor.
Grant me the courage
to think, to choose, and to live as a Christian,
joyfully obedient to God.

Cathedral Trustee Named Volunteer of the Month

Cathedral Trustee, Betsy Rowekamp, was named Volunteer of the Month by the Winona Daily News.  Betsy is a member of the Social Justice and Welcome Committees as well as one of our parish trustees. We congratulate Betsy, and her husband Dave, for their honor!

Betsy Rowekamp helped found the Winona Area Catholic Schools Foundation and volunteers at a number of organizations around Winona. She plans to retire from Winona Health this month.

Many people look their whole lives to find something to get behind, something to get passionate about.
Betsy Rowekamp never really had to worry about that -- she found a passion for volunteering a long time ago.
Rowekamp, 67, said that while she enjoys volunteering, it really should be seen as an individual responsibility.
“Each of us has an obligation,” she said. “It takes a real effort to look outside ourselves. I’m no great person for (volunteering).”

Apologetics Class: Defending the Faith - This Monday

Feb. 10 – Monday, 6:30 to 8:00 pm
Statues in Catholic Churches: Is it Not… Idolatry?
In the Old Testament God strictly forbade making images of anything in heaven, on earth and under the earth (Exodus 20 4-5). Since Catholics have statues and honor them, aren’t they disobeying the Lord?  Come to learn and bring a friend!

Prayer for Evangelization

Gracious and merciful God, we pray that through the Holy Spirit all Catholics may hear the call of the New Evangelization and seek a deeper relationship with your Son, Jesus.
We pray that the New Evangelization will renew the Church, inspiring all Catholics to "go forth and make disciples of all nations" and transform society through the power of the Gospel.
We pray for all members of the Church, that we heed the words of Christ - "do not be afraid" - and strengthened by the Holy Spirit's gift of courage, give witness to the Gospel and share our faith with others.

Gift of Warmth for Austin's Pacelli Catholic School

This weekend the Austin Daily Herald did a story about Cathedral parishioner Angie Bork and her work quilting for Catholic Schools and causes around the area. Angie most recently donated 60 quilts to the Pacelli Catholic Elementary School in Austin, MN. We're blessed to have such thoughtful people in our cluster community!

Katherine Moore, left, talks about her mother, Angie Bork, who donated quilts to Pacelli students.
An act of kindness goes a long way, or so Katherine Moore told 3-, 4- and 5-year-olds at Pacelli Elementary School Wednesday morning.
Moore should know. She and her sister, Julie Krackow, have watched their 85-year-old mother make quilts for children for a long, long time.
“She’s been doing this forever,” Krackow said.
Krackow and Moore were at Pacelli to deliver more than 60 quilts made by Angie Bork, a Wisconsin woman who has made quilts for children at catholic schools and those in need across the country for years.
“It’s amazing,” said Laura Marreel, Pacelli Catholic Schools assistant principal.
