Mission in the Name of Jesus

What are you doing with you life?  Are you an active member of the Church or does Jesus not need you?  Of course He needs you, of course He has called you to follow Him.  The Name of Jesus is our salvation and He invites us to share His name with others.  How is He calling for you to serve the Church in the world?  Click here for the full text of my homily.

Reflections on the 50th Anniversary International Stewardship Conference in Chicago

From Sunday to Wednesday I had the opportunity to attend my second the International Catholic Stewardship Conference. This year's conference was held in Chicago.  The conference consists of four days of sessions on various Stewardship themes, as well as daily celebration of the Eucharist. Thousands of people from all around the globe come to one place for the purpose of finding new ways to spread our ministries and become better stewards of our faith communities. Although the official theme was "Hearts on Fire", I think the common thread was much more about learning to be grateful for all the blessings we have.

Volunteers are needed for coffee and donuts after the 7am and 10:30am Masses on Sunday. Sign up sheets to volunteer for this ministry are located near the elevator in the gathering space of the church. For more information contact the parish office.

Saint Vincent de Paul

Today is the Feast day of Saint Vincent de Paul.  Saint Vincent was a priest who faithfully took care of the poor and worked to educate and reform the clergy.  He served as a wonderful model of how to live out a holy life as a priest. The Society of Saint Vincent de Paul has adopted him as their patron in their mission to the poor. Click here for a link to a biography on this wonderful saint.

Stewardship Weekends at Cathedral and St. Casimir

As we have done the past few years, we will be having our annual Fall Stewardship weekends with Msgr. Colletti preaching this weekend and Fr. Kern preaching next weekend on our call to be good stewards of God’s gifts. Stewardship is defined as our generous response to God for all the blessings we have received in life. All believers are asked to return a portion of their blessings to the service of the Kingdom, the service of the Church, through sharing their time, talent and treasure. We seek to grow as stewardship parishes, which means we ask every member of our faith community to generously support the mission and life of the parish through their weekly offering and through a commitment to a parish ministry, organization, program or activity. We have these beautiful Churches of Cathedral of the Sacred Heart and St. Casimir to worship Him in, and the freedom to do so.

Celebration of Marriage

The Diocese will be hosting a Celebration of Marriage at Cathedral on Sunday, September 30th. Bishop Quinn will preside at a special celebration of the Eucharist at 2:00 pm honoring married couples and extending special blessings.
Married couples are invited to join in a light reception with the Bishop following the Mass. The celebration is a great way to honor a loved one's anniversary or celebrate your own! This celebration is not restricted to any particular anniversary. A full color certificate will be presented to all attending couples.
Bishop Quinn wishes to send a special invitation to married couples who will be celebrating this year. If you or someone you know would like to receive an invitation, please click here to get a copy of the form and submission information.
Thank you.

Stewardship Prayer

This was the stewardship prayer we used before every session at the conference this week.

Lord Jesus Christ,
with hearts on fire we welcome you.

Walk with us, we pray...
Teach us to recognize you,
and help us put aside everything to follow you.

Open the Scriptures to us...
That we may know you, see you, hear you -
in the assembly of the Baptized,
in the ministries of the Church
in the proclamation of the Word,
and in the Breaking of the Bread.

Server Issues

Our server was down almost all day today due to a complete server failure. Thankfully, it is now mostly back up and running, but they still have some work to do on it. We apologize to those of you whom this affects, and thank you for being understanding.

Marriage Amendment Update

A group calling itself “Catholics for Marriage Equality MN” seeks to confuse Catholics and the public about authentic Church teaching related to matters of marriage and sexuality. The Diocese of Winona wishes to make it known that this group does not speak for the Catholic Church, is not an agent or entity of the Diocese of Winona or the universal Church, and has no authority to determine what does and does not constitute Christian doctrine and morality. The Diocese asks that Catholics avoid associating themselves with this group, and not be deceived by its messages, which are in conflict with the fundamental teachings of the Church.   Catholics for Marriage Equality MN” attempts to convince Catholics that they can be in good standing with the Church and oppose Church teaching about human sexuality and marriage, which centers on the complementarity of the sexes and the mutual self-gift of loving spouses in marital union.

God Forgives

I wanted to take the opportunity to post a video that is a heart tugger.  It is also very uplifting.  I encourage you to take the time to watch it as it is the video of a woman whose husband was just killed in the line of duty as a police officer in West Bloomfield, MI.  This is a suburb of Detroit where I went to school.  This video is powerful as she speaks about how she is handling the pain.

Praying for Marriage

Picture of me praying the Nuptial Blessing at my brother's wedding!

Join us in praying for the sanctity of Marriage this Saturday, September 15th at Saint Mary's Parish starting at  9:00am.  We will have a holy hour and pray for Marriage to be respected and cared for in Minnesota.  In a particular way, we will pray for the Amendment to the constitution to designate marriage between one man and one woman. Click below for more information on the Marriage amendment and why we are praying for this most important cause.

God is not afraid of a Mess!

Our God enters into the midst of our lives right where we are at.  In this weekend's Gospel, Jesus puts His fingers in the deaf man's ears, spits, and touches his tongue all to heal him.  He then cries out for the man to be opened!  God continues to encounter us in this way by coming to us and opening our hearts to receive Him.  This weekend as we renew our Consecration to Jesus through Mary we seek the grace to be opened anew by God.  Click here for a full text of my Sunday homily.

New Youth Group Opportunity!

There will be a new youth group starting up this Fall, open to any senior high youth in the Winona area.

The group will meet on the third Sunday of the month September thru May, from 6:00 pm until 8:00pm. The meeting place will be split between St. Mary's Parish and the Cathedral School.
The evenings will consist of games, food, fun, and prayer. In addition to the meetings, there may be additional opportunities to do service projects, and to attend concerts, conferences and retreats throughout the year. Click "More" for the full schedule and more information!

Diocese Renews Consecration to the Blessed Virgin Mary

This weekend at all the Masses in the Diocese we will be renewing a consecration made to the Blessed Mother which Bishop Quinn beseeches "will solemnly bind and consecrate the land and all the people living in the Diocese of Winona to Your Immaculate Heart; cover us with Your Loving Mantle of Mercy and Compassion."  This will be an opportunity for each of us to consecrate both our personal lives to Mary and our mission as a member of the Diocese to be under her protection and loving care.  This beautiful tradition was one in which Bishop Harrington started at the end of his leadership of our diocese in 2008 and which Bishop Quinn happily continues with a yearly renewal of this Consecration.  Click here for a brochure on the Consecration.

Do my sins really matter?...

Jesus Christ has triumphed over sin and death.  He has bestowed the grace of this triumph unto us.  We must participate with this grace to overcome sin!  Sin is conquerable but only in and through life with Christ.  Our call and challenge is to live in God's grace.  Click here for the full text of Sunday's homily.
